When I create a table in Word, there is a symbol of reverse arrows with a double line in between that shows up when I put the cursor over a gridline. This indicates that I can drag the line to adjust my column or row width or height. But I have a manuscript file with no tables in it, and the same symbol shows up when my cursor is right at the document's margins. It's like there is a hidden table or something. It's very strange and doesn't happen in any other of my Word docs.

So what I need is a way to scale the table *and* text downward in size to fit a page width. Or maybe if I could have some pages in the word doc in portrait and the pages with the tables in landscape that would work too. Reduce the Table Column Margins. Reduce left and right margin within the cells (default 0.08 inches may be too Study the table to see if there is a row that uses more than one line. If you're using Word 97 or later, you may use the File / Print Preview and select the Shrink to Fit button on the.
Does anyone know why? The other thing about this document is it is 1.7 MB but there are no photos or images imbedded. It's all type. It seems like it should be about half a megabyte at best.

I was interested in this official Microsoft Word blog post on using WordPad to find out your printer’s printable area:. However, the information provided in this post didn’t work for me in WordPad on my Windows XP computer, nor on my Vista laptop. Instead, I tried something similar in the various versions of Word that I have and I was able to see the minimum margins that my printer requires. Here’s how:. Open a new Word document.
Go to page setup:. Word 2003: File Page Setup. Word 2007 and Word 2010: Page Layout tab Margins Custom Margins. Set all margins to 0. You’ll get a message saying the margins are outside the printable area (the message may vary slightly depending on which version of Word you’re using). Your printer’s margins will now populate the margin fields. Links last checked March 2011.
The problem is, I opened MSword, did what was suggested and got the real margins for my Brother printer which I already knew were the real margins because it had printed up to them before. The left margin said 0.13 inch. But I wanted 0.20 inch so I bumped it up to that in the Margin set up box, THEN when I went to print, it said margins outside printa ble area and when I said “Fix” it populated the left margin with 0.86 inch. THEN, when I closed word and tried setting the margins to zero again, it stuck with the 0.86 inch left margin. Real Name June 25, 2014 at 6:12 am.
